Car Window Tinting Laws

​The window tinting laws that apply in New York were created in 1991 and updated in 2017. Here, we are giving consumers the information that they need about having their vehicle windows tinted in New York. This includes information about how dark and how reflective the tint can be. In addition to these aspects of tinting, we offer additional tinting regulations and rules that apply in New York. 

​New York Window Tint Darkness
Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is the amount of visible light that is allowed to come through your vehicle windows. The percentage of light that can come through the film or glass is very specific in New York and varies depending on the type of vehicle it is.
 
Darkness tint for sedans –

  1. Front side window tint must require a minimum of 70% of light to shine through
  2. Backside window tint must require a minimum of 70% of light to shine through
  3. Windshield must allow 70% of light to shine through (an exception for non-reflective tint is allowed with any darkness can be used on top 6 inches)
  4. Rear Window tint allows any amount of darkness to be used when using dual exterior rearview mirrors.
 
Darkness for SUV and vans –

  1. Front side window tint must require a minimum of 70% of light to shine through
  2. Backside windows allow any amount of darkness
  3. Windshield require a minimum of 70% of light to shine through (an exception for non-reflective tint is allowed for any darkness can be used on top 6 inches)
  4. Rear window allows any level of darkness
 
Reflective Window Tint in NY
A vehicle's window tint can reflect incoming light and minimize the glare and amount of heat. New York window tint law allows for a certain window reflection when a tint is installed. This should be paid strict attention to.
 
Reflective Tint for sedans –
​
  1. Front side windows are prohibited to have a mirrored or metallic appearance
  2. Backside windows are prohibited to have a mirrored or metallic appearance
